Α marriage no one can object to is the combination of wine and cheese. Each is delicious on its own, but when you pair the two, magic happens. However, not all cheeses match all wines – although this assertion is always subjective and a matter of taste. In general, we follow the same rules that are applied for main dishes: light dishes – young fruity wines, high fat juicy meats – full bodied red wines.


Red wine is commonly known for its robustness and its bold flavours. Rich tannins, full body, complex character. Even more so, when red wine is aged, it needs special handling. Therefore, when a bottle of robust red wine is opened, a platter of strong and rich cheeses is the best way to complement it, indulging all the wine lovers in a unique experience.

The ideal companion for red wines

Several cheeses match red wine. In general, red wines finely combine with long-matured cheeses. The ultimate cheese, to start creating your platter, is an aged Greek kefalotyri. Do not hesitate to try halloumi cheese for a lighter red wine. Our local cheese perfectly accompanies a more bodied red wine, when it is roasted. For a mature wine aged in an oak barrel, you should prefer smoked cheeses that will suit its aromatic tastes. Other cheeses that can accompany your platter are emmental, Greek graviera, and Gouda; matured yellow cheeses that contain a lot of fat and high acidity.

With regard to sausages and cured meats, follow the same pattern. Full of flavour, dense, robust deli, such as the traditional Cypriot lountza, thinly sliced, or chiromeri, cut into small chunks, is a perfect match for red robust wine. If you wish to add an international touch to your platter, you can also serve prosciutto, liver pate and Frankfurt sausages.

Don’t forget to decorate your platter with fruit. Grape, pomegranate, figs or pear, seasonal fruit that add a touch of colour and coolness after the intense flavour of the cheese, are ideal. Last, but not least, marmalades, honey, and all sorts of bread and/or crackers are great options to enhance your platter.
